I first got excited about Ayqa Khan when I came across the photoshoot she did with her sister Aleema earlier this month. Unlike delicate, minimalist images of white bodies and monochrome set-ups that I am so used to seeing, hers don’t shy away from saturation into the photographic safety of pale light/silence. Really, Ayqa doesn’t shy away in general. Her new series Generation America combines photography and digital illustration to energize still images. Elements of Pakistani culture are presented playfully but also as somehow sinister, making it hard to tell whether you’re seeing the objects and people through the eyes of a local or an intruder.

Support Fried Icecream, A Quirky Film About Self-Discovery At the Height Of Summer.

“The Summer is Ours…”

FRIED ICECREAM is a coming-of-age story about young mavericks, encapsulated within a tale of summertime’s vibrant adventures and Catch-22s. It follows AKEEBAH & SLOAN, two mix-matched peas in a pod living and finding themselves in the summer solstice of Atlanta’s inner-city.

Faced with ultimatums by their parental figures and Sallie Mae to work summer jobs in order to afford their last semester in college, they arbitrarily become ice-cream truck drivers in West End Atlanta. Quirky adventures ensue when their entrepreneurial spirits become hallucinogenic.

Colorful, whimsical, and dark, the film nostalgically explores the turbulence and beauty of maturing in a neighborhood filled with the ups and downs of inner-city living: where children die in the summer, where busted fire hydrants act as water parks, and the sound of an ice-cream truck is a serenade.

WHY DOES FRIED ICECREAM NEED TO BE PRODUCED?

The spectrum of films starring women of color is narrow. The amount of films created by women of color is even smaller. We believe there is power in telling our stories from conception to execution. We believe there is untapped ground between Claire Huxtable and Olivia Pope that needs to be explored narratively and visually on the silver screen. Denise Huxtable needs a space to grow up cinematically.

So, in starbucks today, a random guy came up to my and told me I was very pretty and nice eyes.

And, as a feminist, I was okay with it.

Because he did it correctly.

He stood four feet away from me and started out with “excuse me” and waited until I nodded before approaching. He then introduced himself and we shook hands and then he gave a compliment and went on his way.

He didnt catcall. He didnt harass. He didnt use inappropriate language. He asked for permission.

Take note, gentlemen.

i just loved the fact that he actually WAITED for her CONSENT

BEFORE approaching her

and not only that

he didn’t sexualize her

i mean

finally, someone gets it

I feel like this is important to share, because we get so much shit from guys who are like “so what, we can’t EVER compliment a woman without it being harassment??”  No.  No one said that.  I have received compliments and I have received street harassment, and I promise you I can tell you which is which.
